Hi Sedaris fans! Please help me track down this story! So I've been Googling and Googling and Googling but I can't find what I'm looking for....didn't David Sedaris once do a reading about people who take dumps on the floors of stores? Perhaps it's in his latest book which, because I'm slacking in my obsessive-Amy-and-David-fandom practices, I have not read yet.I seem to recall hearing David say something about how the first thing he asks someone who works in retail is "Do people take dumps out in the aisles of where you work?" and then they whisper, awed, "HOW DID YOU KNOW??!?!??" and tell him many, many funny things about customers who, uhm, grace the store with their, uh, presence (presents?).If this story doesn't actually exist, and I'm inadvertently making this up completely, I am going to be so embarassed. Please find it so I don't think it's the product of my perverse mind...
I've read everything except for Barrel Fever and I can't remember anything like that. Not saying it doesn't exist, it just isn't in any of those books. And I just read all of them fairly recently, over the past 2 months. Sorry :(
Oh and you need to read his newest ASAP because it is EXCELLENT (of course.) I'm too poor to buy a hardcover, so I got on the waiting list at my public library and only a week or so later, got the call to come get the book :)
Thanks for your help and for the recommendation! You've inspired me to stop being lazy and actually read it...I love David's work and haven't read it in so long!
OMG I know what you're talking about! He was talking about people taking dumps in the fitting rooms of clothing stores or maybe a thrift store, and he wanted to find out if this was a common occurrence, so he asked about it. Damn, I have no idea what book or story that is and it's going to bother me now. If you find out, let me know (and I will do the same). I'll skim through my books tonight.
Thanks! Someone below found it on an episode of This American Life.
It does exist. I'm not sure if the story was ever published, but it was run on an episode of This American Life.
Yessss!!!! That is exactly where I heard it! Thank you!
I went to a reading in either 2004 or 2005 and he definitely, absolutely talked about this.
Glad to know I'm not crazy! Apparently it was also on This American Life.
if it doesn't exist, i've worked enough retail to know it does exist. ;)
Hahahah!! Someone found it, but I know what you mean....I personally have not worked in retail but I was talking to a couple of people last week who work in a big Barnes and Noble, and I said, "So...got any good stories?" Ohhhh did they ever....and about 80% of them (the ones that weren't about people masturbating in the aisles) were about pooping. What is wrong with people?!?!?! Hahahahahahhaha
pretty sure it's an excerpt from Me Talk Pretty One Day.
Hmm, I don't think so...now I think it was just something he did on reading tours later on, but thanks! That book is due for a reread so you may be right!
i know it's definitely in one of his audiobooks. i only own Barrel Fever anymore, so i'm not sure.
how's this for a response...six months later. lol.i just heard this story on my Barrel Fever audiobook. disc 3. track 10.
i've never heard that story before, but after finding used tampons, people having sex - including an orgy of four teenagers - inside fitting rooms, i'm ready to believe anything.
EEEEEEEEEEEEW. ahahahahhahahahah oh my dear lord.As I told a commenter above, I personally have not worked in retail but I was talking to a couple of people last week who work in a big Barnes and Noble, and I said, "So...got any good stories?" Ohhhh did they ever....and about 80% of them (the ones that weren't about people masturbating in the aisles) were about pooping. No orgy though.
Adventures at Poo Corners! LMAO! Gawd I love David.
I have a download of this from either This American Life or a live reading. Once I locate it I can share a link. I can't believe he hasn't published that one! It's a total riot.
